Spain 2002
Cordoba, Spain.
From Wikipedia: "It has been estimated that Córdoba, with up to 500,000 inhabitants in the tenth century, was the largest city in Western Europe and, perhaps, in the world." I remember our guides relating this fact to us when we visited. I was skeptical such a high number at the time, but it sounds like there might be something to it. Anyway, Cordoba is a delightful city, and very well-preserved. I saw my first real Flamenco show here.
