Tucumcari is small, desolate, and lonely. You can really feel the desert that surrounds you. Just walk in any direction out of town and suddenly you're in the sand. Nevertheless, the city is in fact the largest town between Amarillo and Albequerque and. Its position provided Tucumcari with a reason for existence during the days of Route 66, which ran through town. Today, Tucumcari leans heavily on its historical connection with the famed highway.
