40th Street, Port Authority Bus Terminal
Part of the Port Authority Bus Terminal spans 40th Street (seen here facing east). Rising above the bus terminal is Renzo Piano's new tower for the New York Times, currently under construction on 8th Avenue.
The Port Authority Bus Terminal opened in 1950 and currently serves approximately 7,200 buses and 200,000 on the average weekday. The best that can be said about the place is that it's utilitarian. Its reputation for dangerouness has changed dramatically, however, as Times Square has become safer. With the arrival of the New York Times tower on 8th Avenue, this area will be almost unrecognizable from its former seedy state.
