Second Avenue & Ninth Street
In 1880 the IRT opened the 2nd Avenue Elevated Railway, running from South Ferry to 65th Street. The El closed in June 1942 and almost immediately thereafter, city residents began clamoring for a 2nd Avenue Subway. Digging began for this line in 1972 but was halted a few years later when the city went bankrupt. In 2005 New Yorkers passed the Transportation Bond Act, which, supposedly, will partially fund construction of the line, which will run from Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan, to 125th Street in Harlem. The line has been designated "T" by the MTA.
